Nepal‘s existing monarchy came to an end on 15th Jestha 2065. This day has marked the commencement of the republican government system in Nepal. It began with concluding the 240-year-old kingship.

Modern Nepal emerged in 1768, with rulers in power until 1951, when the prime minister and other administrations held no authority. The end of Rana’s oligarchy in 1951 was due to the same reason. Initially, the nation functioned as a constitutional monarchy, but King Mahendra dissolved the constitution, seizing supreme authority under the Panchayat administration. However, the People’s Movement in 1990 led to the end of the Panchayat system, restoring constitutional sovereignty. King Birendra introduced significant democratic reforms, including an elected assembly in 1991, after 32 years.
The early 1990s saw the rise of the Maoist revolution, which escalated into a civil war due to the elected government’s approach and financial crisis. The Democracy campaign in 2006, led by the seven-party alliance, brought an end to the civil war, integrating the Maoists into mainstream politics. Consequently, the Constituent Assembly was elected in 2008, officially declaring Nepal as a legislative republic.
