Significance
The main significance of Jitiya Vrat is the longevity and prosperity of children. However, people also believe that fasting and performing the rituals on this day would not deprive women of having a child.
The mythology behind the festival is that when Ashwathama attempted to kill King Parikshit while in Uttara’s womb, Lord Krishna revived him, which is the reason for the name- Jiwitputrika vrat.
The first day of the Jitiya Parwa is Bathing(नहाय खाय), followed by fasting(निर्जला व्रत) on the second day and ending(पारण) the fast on the third day.
Like many other festivities, this one also includes wearing new clothes and donating to the needy ones.
