Jitiya is also an ornament that a woman wears at the end of the Jitia fast.

Date

The Jivitputrika Vrat is marked on 8th October. It is Three-day long fasting that extends from 6th-8th October 2022.

People celebrate it on the Ashtami Tithi (Krishna Paksha) of the Ashwin month.

The timings for Ashtami are 2:29 PM on 7th October to 4:47 PM on 8th October.

Significance

The main significance of Jitiya Vrat is the longevity and prosperity of children. However, people also believe that fasting and performing the rituals on this day would not deprive women of having a child.

The mythology behind the festival is that when Ashwathama attempted to kill King Parikshit while in Uttara’s womb, Lord Krishna revived him and that’s the reason for the name; Jiwitputrika vrat.

The first day of the Jitiya Parwa is Bathing(नहाय खाय), followed by fasting(निर्जला व्रत) on the second day and ending(पारण) the fast on the third day.

Like many other festivities, this one also includes wearing new clothes and donating to the needy ones.

Nepal has colossal devotion and celebration vibes for Jitiya, specifically for Mithila and Tharu women. In Nepal, people also celebrate it as Jivit Putra Parva, symbolizing the joy and progress of the children.

Women in Nepal worship Lord Jeetmahan Gonsai and observe the waterless/Nirjala fast for 24 hours. The Tharu community celebrates Jitia with inherited attires, music, and dance melodies.
