Today is Lord Krishna’s birthday. Krishna is the 8th avatar of Lord Vishnu, who taught his devotees the meaning of love. Krishna Janmastami 2025 celebrates his birth.

Lord Krishna was the one with a flute in his hand and a peacock feather on his throne. He was encircled by Gopis (Female devotees) and had a personality that enchanted everyone.

Date and Timings

This year, Krishna Janmastami will be observed on 15 August 2025. It is marked on the eighth day of Krishna Paksha in August- September (Bhadrapada). As per Drikpanchang, it is Krishna’s 5252nd birthday this year.

The Krishna Janmashtami Subh Mahurat will be from 12:03 AM to 12:50 AM on 16 August 2025. Some places in India also celebrate Dahi Handi on the next day.

History (Krishna’s Story)

Lord Krishna was born to King Vasudev and Queen Devaki, who were imprisoned by Kansh. The oracle that the 8th child of Devaki would be the reason for the destruction of tyrant Kansh was the reason behind this. 

A famous saying in Hindi goes- “Honi ko kaun taal sakta hai”. Nobody can alter what has already been written and is deemed to happen. Lord Krishna grew strong and wise enough to kill Kansh, and that’s exactly what happened.

In the meantime, Krishna had crossed many assassination conspiracies and battled hundreds of demons sent by Kansh.

In the later stage of his life, Krishna grew wise and intellectual enough to conduct the Battle of Mahabharat. Mahabharat was the battle for Kaurava’s injustice on Pandavas for Hastinapur. The purpose of Mahabharat was the Eternal Bhagwad Geeta. Bhagwad Geeta advises about the nature of life, ethics, and morality between good and evil, the perishability of matter, the permanence of the soul and the good, duties and responsibilities, and the nature of true peace.

It is a long story short, with many prodigious tales of Lord Krishna at every stage of his life.

Observances

The Dwapar Yuga tale validates the birth of Lord Krishna in Mathura, India. People celebrate his birthday with great joy and devotion and multiple events across India, Nepal, and worldwide. Here are some of the observances;

• Puja and Bhog: The day starts and ends with prayers, and a Bhog is offered to Lord Krishna. The bhog includes Lord Krishna’s favourite things, such as Makhan-Mishri and Panjeerie.
• Fasting: The devotees pledge a day-long fast to be complete after Rohini Nakshatra and Ashtami Tithi.
• Dahi Handi: Inspired by Lord Krishna breaking Handi(Earthen Pots) to savour Makhan Malai, this event includes breaking a Handi held high. People tie the Dahi-filled handi high up in the air and crack it with their hands, rising over each other.

• Decoration for Krishna Janmashtami: The entire city of Mathura and Vrindavan decorates like a new bride to honour the day. Some people make colourful rangoli decorations for Krishna Janmastami in their houses. The day also includes decorating Krishna’s idol with new clothes, mukut with mor pankh, shankh, bansuri, Sudarshan chakra, kundal-mani, mala, sharang Dhanush, Payal, etc.
• Cultural dance and singing: Various programs are observable everywhere around cities and Villages to mark the birth of Lord Krishna.
• Rath Yatra: Many cities worldwide organise Rath Yatra(Chariot Procession) and Jhankis. One of the best ones is observable in Biratnagar, Nepal.
• Krishna Janmashtami photoshoot: People dress their young ones as little Krishna for different events on Facebook and other social media platforms.

Many places around the world organise Rath Yatra(Chariot Procession) on Krishna Janmastami. Dwarka and Kolkata in India witness enormous crowds ready for Krishna Rath Yatra.

Likewise, Biratnagar in Nepal witnesses one of the most prominent Rath Yatras in Asia, “Shri Krishna Janmastami Rath Yatra.” People from all over Nepal and India visit the place for this grand celebration. The crowdy, long procession includes beautiful depictions and cute little kids dressed as Krishna and Radha.
