History and background

Bakra-eid or Bakrid or Eidal-Adha or Eid Qurban or Qurban Bayarami is also known as the festival of sacrifice. It is so because Prophet Ibrahim attempted to devote his child to showcase his submission to Allah. Although, it did not happen likewise as he had to sacrifice a lamb instead as instructed by Allah, hence the name Bakrid.

The day also witnesses a sermon by the imam after the mid-day Namaz during zuhr time.

Like Diwali, people meet and greet families and friends, cook delicacies and wear new outfits with a great deal of enthusiasm. They exchange gifts or Idhi and joyful greetings of “Eid Mubarak” resonate everywhere.

Bakr-id refers to the Indian subcontinent name, and Id-ul-Adha is the Arabic name for the same festival.
Eid al-Adha has different names as Qurbon Hayiti in Uzbekistan, Idul Azha in Bangladesh, Kurbanir Id in Bengali and Id ul Baqarah in Egypt.

Eid al-Adha/Bakrid in Nepal 2024

The festival of Eid al-Adha/Bakrid witnesses great enthusiasm from people across Nepal. According to the date declared by Saudi Arabia, the festival will begin on 16th of June, 2024 globally but, it will be on the next day in Nepal. Eid al-Adha will be marked on the 17th of June, 2024 or the 3rd Asadh, 2081 in Nepal as per the Imam of Kathmandu’s Jama Masjid.

Muslims visit the mosque on Bakri-Eid, wearing their best dresses. They offer Dua or Prayer to Allah and attend the Koranic story of Ibrahim’s readiness to devote his boy Ishmael to Allah but sacrificed a lamb in his place. Bakrid is a celebration of the enthusiasm and devotion of devotees towards Allah and the sacred Quran.

As per COVID-19 guidelines, Muslim Commission requests to avoid gathering more than five people for Namaj and celebrate Eid al-Adha at home.
