History and background

Bakra-eid, also known as Bakrid, Eidal-Adha, Eid Qurban, or Qurban Bayarami, is also known as the festival of sacrifice. It is so because Prophet Ibrahim attempted to dedicate his child to showcase his submission to Allah. However, it did not happen, as he had to sacrifice a lamb instead as instructed by Allah, hence the name Bakrid.

The day also indicates the completion of the Hajj pilgrimage. The 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the 12th month of the Lunar calendar acceptable in Islam, marks the celebration of Bakrid. As per Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, the sight of the crescent moon will fall on 11 July, and hence, Bakrid will be celebrated on the same day in India.

Significance of the festival

The significance of this festival is that the sacrificed lamb serves the purpose of commitment to Allah and contributing back to the community. It happens by distributing three shares of meat to friends, families and the underprivileged.

The day also witnesses a sermon by the imam after the mid-day Namaz during zuhr time.

Like Diwali, people meet and greet families and friends, cook delicacies, and wear new outfits with great enthusiasm. They exchange gifts or Idhi, and the joyful greetings of “Eid Mubarak” resonate everywhere.

Facts about Eid

Bakr-id refers to the name of the Indian subcontinent, and Id-ul-Adha is the Arabic name used for the same festival.
Eid al-Adha has different names, such as Qurbon Hayiti in Uzbekistan, Idul Azha in Bangladesh, Kurbanir Id in Bengali and Id ul Baqarah in Egypt.

Naib Shahi Imam Syed Shaban Bukhari of Jama Masjid, Maulana Khalid Rasheed of Markazi Chand Committee Farangi Mahali and Samastha Kerala Jem Iyyathul Ulma from Kerala confirmed the sighting of the Crescent moon on 16 June.

Eid al-Adha/Bakrid in Nepal 2024

The festival of Eid al-Adha/Bakrid witnesses great enthusiasm from people across Nepal. According to the date declared by Saudi Arabia, the festival will begin on 16 June 2024 globally, but it will be on the next day in Nepal. Eid al-Adha will be marked on 17 June 2024 or the 3rd Asadh, 2081, in Nepal, as per the Imam of Kathmandu’s Jama Masjid.

Muslims visit the mosque on Bakri-Eid, wearing their best dresses. They offer a Dua or Prayer to Allah and attend the Koranic story of Ibrahim’s readiness to devote his boy Ishmael to Allah but sacrifice a lamb in his place. Bakrid is a celebration of devotees’ enthusiasm and devotion towards Allah and the sacred Quran.

As per COVID-19 guidelines, the Muslim Commission requests that people avoid gathering more than five people for Namaj and celebrate Eid al-Adha at home.
