History
National Honey Bee Day began in 2009 with a proclamation published by the Secretary of Agriculture, Thomas J. Vilsek. Honey’s health and monetary benefits added to the day’s importance.

- Flavours of honey differ depending on the species of flowers and nectar available to the bees.
- There are around 20,000 diverse species of bees in the world.
- Bees include the bumble bee, the honey bee, mason bees, Digger Bees, and mining bees.
- Bees help pollinate approximately 90% of flowering plants and 70% of the main crops.
- The economic participation of bees is estimated to be above $14 billion a year.
- A honey bee hive can hold around 20,000 – 60,000 bees.
- Under ideal conditions, a healthy beehive can deliver up to 200 pounds of honey per year.
