Happy Independence Day India | 15 August

India is all set to honour its 76th Independence Day on 15th August 2023. The journey of independence from British rule has been a tale worth telling, marked with pride and courage. The quest for an independent India has also witnessed sacrifices from many freedom warriors.

Mahatma Gandhi was the man behind independence from the 200 Year British rule. India attained freedom on 15th August 1947.

Other significant courageous patriots who contributed to the mission were Bhagat Singh, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Chandra Shekhar Azad, Subhas Chandra Bose, and many more.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Independence Day celebration would happen differently. Prime Minister Narendra Modi would address the nation from Red Fort accompanied by Olympics players of India from The Tokyo Olympics 2020.

History and Significance

With varied tales of violent and non-violent movements to extirpate the Britishers, the Indian Independence Bill provoked the termination of British rule in India on 15th August 1947. The bill got presented and passed by the British House of Commons on 4th July 1947.

The independence of India also resulted in the formation of Pakistan by bifurcation.

The history of Indian Independence Day began with the hoisting of the Indian national flag on Lahori Gate, Red Fort, Delhi, by the first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on 15th August. The incumbent Prime Minister follows the same tradition with an address to the citizens.

  • The national flag of India had Red, yellow, and green colours initially in 1906, while the current flag with saffron, white and green colours and the Ashok Chakra got affiliated in 1947.
  • The national flag of India is hand-spun and handwoven cotton khadi wafting from Karnataka Khadi Gramodyoga Samyukta Sangha (KKGSS), the only authorized maker.
  • The colours of the national flag, Saffron colour represents courage, sacrifice, and renunciation, white denotes truth and purity, and green stands for life, faith and chivalry. The wheel signifies unceasing action and progress.
  • Goa is the newest state to join the Indian territory in 1961, which was a Portuguese colony back then.
  • Bahrain, North Korea, South Korea, and Liechtenstein mark their Independence Day on 15th August with India.
