History and Significance
There may be some discrepancies within the Jain community regarding Lord Mahavira’s birth year, but both Swetamber and Digambar Jains consider that he was born on the 13th day of Chaitra’s waxing Moon. As per assumptions, he was born in Kundalpur near Patna, Bihar, to King Siddhartha and Queen Trisala.
At 30, Vardhaman left his home and the kingship for 12 years of exile as an ascetic. At the age of 72, he attained Nirvana/enlightenment, orated non-violence, and acquired special skills in regulating the senses and got the name Mahavira.
Jains admire and idolize Lord Mahavir, and they celebrate the day with great joy. Devotees visit Jain temples and shower the effigy of Lord Mahavira with aromatic oils as a token of purity. They organize a procession(Rath Yatra) of Lord Mahabir’s idol with the idea of offering food and clothes to the needy and opposing animal slaughter.
Some places of high ancient values in the Jain community include Gomateshwara, Madhuban, Girnarji, Gajpantha, and Mangi Tungi. People visit these places and offer food and gifts to the needy.
