Chhath Puja is a 4-day long Hindu festival dedicated to worshipping Surya Dev(Lord Sun) and Shashthi Devi(Chhathi Maiya). The festival is celebrated in Northern India and Nepal with a great deal of religious fervency. On this Chhath Puja 2023, may Chhathi Maiya proffer prosperity and wellness to her devotees and their families.
Chhath Puja is also known as Surya Shashti(सूर्य षष्ठी), Chhath(छठ), Chhathi, Chhath Parv(छठ पर्व), Dala Puja and Dala Chhath. We usually celebrate it on the 6 day after Diwali/Tihar.

Festivals of Chhat Puja Nepal
We celebrate Chath for 4 consecutive days and here are the details.
Nahay- Khaye
Women of the families observe fast on Chhath termed as nahay khay. For this, they prepare a Satvik meal(Without Onion and Garlic and with utmost hygiene) and Kaddu Bhat is one of the prominent ones, that is offered to the goddess. Women observing the fast will have a single meal(Khaye) throughout the day and will take a holy dip(Nahaye) in the rivers.
We shall celebrate Nhay-Khaye on 17th November 2023.
Kharna or Lohanda
Kharna is the second day of the Chhath festival which will be celebrated on 18th November 2023. On this day, women fast without water(Nirjala) for the entire day from sunrise to sunset. Devotees prepare Rice Pudding(Kheer) as prasad on this day and share it with everyone they can.
Evening Arghya (Sandhya Arghya/Pehli Arghya)
Arghya refers to the traditional style of worshipping the setting Sun(Surya Devta) while standing in water sources like Rivers or Ponds. On the evenings of the third day, people gather on the Ghats where they offer Aarti and Prasad to Chhathi Maiyya.
This beautiful gathering of people with Prasad and Fruits at the ghats will be observed on 19th November 2023.
Morning Argha(Usha Arghya)
Some devotees prefer to stay at the Ghats for the entire night after the Evening Arghya to worship Lord Surya during the sunrise on the fourth day. While others return home and get back to the Ghats before sunrise for Usha Arghya.
Devotees will end their fasts by worshipping the rising Sun on 20th November 2023 with the conclusion of the 3 days long Chhath festival.
Chhath puja Date
We shall observe the celebration of Chhath on 19th November 2023. In Nepal, it is from the 3rd Mangshir, 2080 as per the Nepali calendar. The year, on Chatt puja day, we shall witness sunrise at 6:27 AM and sunset at 5:10 PM.
The period from October to November each year usually marks Chath, which people in Kathmandu and other parts of Nepal celebrate with grandeur. People from every region and culture also celebrate Chath for 3 days.

Significance of Chhath
The festival of Chath holds great importance to people from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, and other parts of the nation along with Nepal. Women fast without water for over 36 hours and also carry out all the rituals and preparations for the festivals. This depicts the efforts and devotion of women toward the family.
The folklore behind Chath comes from Mahabharata, where Draupadi and Pandavas are considered to perform similar rituals. This led Draupadi and Pandavas to regain their lost Kingdom.
To the source of energy to the entire planet, this festival helps us to extend sincere thanks to the Sun for its unconditional service. Also, the prayers are to make sure the energy keeps on coming and nurturing the environment and mankind.
